Pioneering Space & Quantum Literacy for Small Island Nations
The Caribbean Space Society (CSS) was co-founded by Dr. Claire Nelson under the auspices of the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS), the leading Caribbean American advocacy organization in Washington, DC.
Operating in partnership with The Futures Forum, CSS leads regional advocacy and education around Space for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our core mission is securing equitable access to space technologies, satellite research, and quantum literacy for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Through Mission ShakthiSAT, CSS is taking a historic leap forward: deploying a ~50-person delegation of student scientists and official territory ambassadors to New Delhi, India, to assemble hardware for a live lunar satellite mission. Beyond this launch, CSS is building the permanent infrastructure to ensure Caribbean youth remain at the forefront of the global aerospace economy.
The CSS Council
The Caribbean Space Society is a coalition of Caribbean leaders, scientists, and educators dedicated to expanding the region's presence in space science and quantum technology. The CSS Council guides the strategic vision and operational direction of the ShaktiSAT mission, from ambassador recruitment to delegate curriculum, fundraising oversight, and international partnerships.
Dr. Claire Nelson
Dr. Claire Nelson is a world-renowned futurist, engineer, and advocate named by Forbes as one of the Top 50 Female Futurists in the World.
The first Jamaican woman to earn a Doctorate in an Engineering discipline, receiving her Ph.D. from George Washington University in 1990.
Founder and President of the Institute of Caribbean Studies (est. 1993), architect of National Caribbean American Heritage Month, and a 2012 White House Champion of Change.
Chief Visionary Officer of The Futures Forum, Founding Convenor of the Space Futures Forum, and member of the Inclusion Council for Space for Humanity.
